The Port of Miami Tunnel will be closed Tuesday night for a drill on how to handle a multi-vehicle crash underground.

Crews from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade Police Department, City of Miami Fire Rescue and the Miami Tunnel will respond to the tunnel, where there will be a staged three-vehicle accident at about 9:45 p.m.

A Unified Command System will be established to coordinate rescue efforts.

The full-scale drill will include real equipment, real personnel and mock victims.

"The drill is intended to provide the closest possible simulation of an actual disaster and provide an excellent opportunity to assess many aspects of an agency's and an overall community's respective preparedness," Miami Tunnel said in a press release.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, both eastbound and westbound lanes of the tunnel will be closed from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The tunnel connects the MacArthur Causeway to the port on Dodge Island.
