Man, 20, charged with robbing, shooting off-duty corrections officer

A 20-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and armed robbery after police said he shot an off-duty corrections officer in South Miami-Dade and stole a gold chain from the man’s neck.

Acting on an anonymous tip, Miami-Dade police arrested Patrick Sullivan late Friday afternoon.

According to police, Juan Guellmes, a 28-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department, was cleaning his car at his home near Southwest 184th Street and 108th Avenue at about 7:15 p.m. Aug. 29 when several armed men approached.

The armed men took a gold chain from Guellmes' neck, police said, and during a struggle, Guellmes, 51, was shot twice — once in the shoulder and once in the stomach.

Guellmes was airlifted to the hospital and is said to be in stable condition.

Police also said that Roderick Everett, 22, was driving the vehicle involved in the incident and that he confessed during an interview.
