Man wounded by police at Publix parking lot in Hialeah

A man who had a confrontation with a Hialeah police officer Tuesday night was shot in the parking lot of a busy Publix Sabor.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. at the supermarket at 1290 West 68th St., police said

The wounded man was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital. His condition is unknown.

"We are investigating a shooting involving one of our officers,’’ said Hialeah police spokesman Carl Zogby.

The officer was working a security detail inside the Publix. Police said the man was committing a crime when the officer tried to stop him.

At least 30 customers remained at the supermarket’s parking lot Tuesday night waiting to be interviewed by detectives. Dozens of officers rerouted traffic around the area.

Customer Raul Vergaras, 51, said he was at the cash register when he heard a commotion and then panic broke out inside the supermarket.

"Everyone started screaming: ‘Run!’" Vergaras said.
