Two people found dead in Wynwood apartment after hours-long standoff

Miami police found a man and a woman shot dead in an apartment near Midtown Miami early Friday morning after SWAT team negotiations failed to persuade the man to give himself up, and police entered the apartment.

By late morning Friday police had not released the names of the victims. The off-white, two-story apartment complex in the 200 block of Northeast 32nd Street was still blocked off by yellow police tape as crime scene investigators studied the apartment and the surrounding area.

Miami Police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes said no shots were fired by police officers.

Another spokesman, Officer Rene Pimentel, said police were called to the building at 3 a.m. by neighbors who said there was a dispute involving a man with a gun. When SWAT arrived, Pimentel said, the man barricaded himself in the apartment and did not respond to repeated questions from Miami police.

“At that point we knew that there was one person armed. We could not know who was in the apartment because he barricaded himself in it,” Pimentel said.

The spokesman said after several hours of failed negotiations, at about 6 a.m., police entered the home and found the two bodies. Police didn’t say if a domestic dispute turned deadly.

The incident took place in an apartment on the ground floor of the apartment complex at 229 NE 32nd Street, directly east of Midtown Miami. A window of the apartment facing a parking lot was smashed in. Its venetian blinds were in tatters.
