Immediately after the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday cleared the way for immediate expansion of marriage rights in as many as 11 states, South Florida LGBT rights group SAVE called on Gov. Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi to drop the appeal of Florida’s federal gay marriage case.

On Tuesday, Log Cabin Republicans of Miami issued a blistering retort, blaming Charlie Crist for passage of the state’s gay marriage ban when he was governor in 2008.

First, the message from SAVE President Tony Lima:

“We are so excited that by letting stand the pro-equality rulings at the circuit level, the Supreme Court made the historic choice today to grant marriage equality to the majority of Americans. But let’s not forget why Florida is in this mess and why there still isn’t equality here: because of the actions of Governor Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi. When the Attorney General proclaims today’s move by the Supreme Court as a “tremendous win” for the nine plaintiffs and SAVE, she is deliberately trying to deflect the attention away from her outspokenly antigay record which has led Florida to where it is today.

“Like the 30 or so states affected by this ruling, Florida could have had marriage equality today, but it won’t — and the blame lies squarely on Governor Scott and Attorney General Bondi for holding up the legal process by indefinitely appealing rulings that are inconvenient for them politically. That’s why SAVE has promised to hold these politicians accountable at the ballot box for their anti-LGBT actions and replace them with strong pro-equality leaders like Charlie Crist for Governor and George Sheldon for Attorney General next month.”

The response from Log Cabin Republicans of Miami President Mimi Planas:

“Happy about the recent ruling regarding the Gay Marriage Ban Appeals - Appalled by SAVE's response. Here is my response to SAVE:

“I am really horrified that you blame the Marriage Ban on Rick Scott and Pam Bondi, when you know full well the one to lobby for, push for and sign the marriage ban in the first place is Charlie Crist whom you have endorsed.

“Although I am happy with this ruling, I am extremely concerned that the LGBT Community is being given FALSE information. You have been harping and demonizing the 2 people who have never played a part in getting this ban passed in the first place and you are letting the one that did off the hook for political purposes ONLY.

“I not only will vote for Rick Scott, I will lobby and now work even harder to get the truth out to the LGBT Community ..... I am very dismayed by your words and the false information you are offering in order to stick it to Rick Scott.

“As for Pam Bondi doing her job? Well, if doing her job makes her the LGBT enemy, then I will have to assume that nothing else she has ever done or will do matters to you except this.”
