Judy Garland’s widescreen Technicolor comeback, A Star is Born, had its Hollywood premiere exactly 60 years ago, on Sept. 29, 1954.

That night, dozens of major movie and television stars including Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Elizabeth Taylor, Dean Martin, Edward G. Robinson, Liberace, Doris Day and Joan Crawford attended the film’s debut at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles. The premiere was televised live and survives as a kinescope.
