Fort Lauderdale residents warned to avoid water after sewer main break

Plans to go swimming in Fort Lauderdale? For now, you might want to swim elsewhere.

Residents have been warned against swimming, fishing and other water-related activities in certain areas after a sewer main break in the parking lot of George English Park, 1101 Bayview Drive. The city of Fort Lauderdale issued a precautionary advisory early Thursday afternoon for water-related activities in the Middle River, Rio Barcelona, Intracoastal waterway and Northern Las Olas Islas areas.

After a second sewer break was found under water at SE 10th Avenue and SE 2nd Street near downtown Fort Lauderdale, the advisory’s boundaries were expanded. George English Lake is closed until further notice, Himmarshee Canal is closed to boats and all public boat launches operated by the city are closed.

Boundaries now extend to I-95, I-595, Northwest and Northeast 38th St. and the Intracoastal waterway.

The advisory was issued after the city consulted with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and will remain in effect until further notice. For more information, call 954-828-8000 or visit the city website.
