Davie resident Deland Wheeler died doing something he loved, riding his motorcycle. Sadly, that ending came Tuesday night at only 23 years old.
According to Broward Sheriff’s Office, Wheeler was driving east on Griffin Road “at a high rate of speed” at around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday when his red Honda motorcycle crashed into the driver’s side door of a Lexus trying to make a left turn from a strip mall on the south side of the street (Wheeler’s right side) in the 3400 block of Griffin. The Lexus driver, 38-year-old Liran Hassin, was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Wheeler was declared dead at the scene.
Broward County records say Wheeler, a New York native who wrestled for Cooper City High, married Nicole Paula in 2012. Though they’ve since split, Paula’s two Facebook posts spoke of the great feeling they still held for each other. One post showed the photos in Wheeler’s wallet when he died (all of her). The other post eulogized Wheeler through their relationship’s emotional history.

Fort Lauderdale’s Jessie Lynn wrote a post that included “Thank you so much for letting me learn how to ride a motorcycle on your CBR500, paying for my motorcycle endorsement and teaching me nothing but love and patience and all the advice you ever gave me. I knew you were an angel before today but GOD wanted his angel back!”
