BSO sergeant facing child porn charges dies after shooting himself

AP

A veteran Broward Sheriff’s Office sergeant, who was arrested last week on charges of child pornography and illicit sexual conduct, shot himself Wednesday evening inside his Sunrise home, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

“BSO Sgt. Kreg Costa was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” BSO said in a news release.

Costa died Thursday morning. He bonded put of jail on Wednesday, the Sun Sentinel reported.

According to Sunrise police, a man called the agency at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and said police immediately should come to the side of the house, 9130 Sunset Strip. When officers arrived, they found a man with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound although he was still breathing, said Sunrise police spokesman Chris Piper.

Piper said no one else was in the house and there weren’t any witnesses. Detectives are at the scene investigating.

Costa, 43, who went by the Twitter handle @CallMeSir34, had been with BSO for 17 years before his arrest Thursday on 29 charges.

His arrest came after a two-month investigation that began when staff at BSO’s Weston district reported Costa staying in his office during night shifts with the lights off and his uniform belt and gun belt removed. The Public Corruption Unit found that he was viewing hardcore pornography, incest-related and bondage/dominance websites on his work-issued laptop, the sheriff’s office said last week.

Costa was suspended without pay.
