Coral Springs officer shoots man during stand-off

A Coral Springs officer shot a man Monday after police say the man — who was barricaded in a bedroom — fired “multiple rounds” through a closed door and pointed a gun out a window “directly at an officer.”

The police-involved shooting happened just after 3 p.m. Monday inside a home at 8358 NW 14th Ct., according to Sgt. Carla Kmiotek, a police spokeswoman.

Kmiotek said officers responded to the home after a family member called to say an armed man was barricaded inside a bedroom. The department's SWAT team and negotiators responded to find the man in a room with the door closed, Kmiotek said.

Negotiators tried to “talk the man out” but he fired through the closed door. Even after the shooting, Kmiotek said the negotiating team tried to convince him to come out.

But then he pointed a gun out the window, aiming directly at an officer stationed outside, Kmiotek said.

That's when the officer fired. The man was hit once, but was “alert.” He was taken to a nearby hospital and now faces possible charges including attempted murder on a law enforcement officer.

Multiple guns were recovered from the bedroom, Kmiotek said.
