Boat explosion sends owner flying off the deck

An explosion on a 28-foot boat injured two and shook at least one building at Dania Beach’s Harbour Towne Marina Wednesday afternoon.

A dislodged fuel vent line in the bilge led to a buildup of fumes that exploded when Steve Armelini, 58, started his boat, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles. The blast blew Armelini off the deck and into the overhead canopy as well as caused the hull and the deck to split. One of Armelini’s passengers, a 17-year-old boy, suffered burns to his feet and jumped into the canal. There was no fire.

Armelini was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital with a head injury. The 17-year-old was treated on the scene. Three other passengers were uninjured.
