Gates were down, bells were clanging. He crossed the tracks anyway, witnesses say.

A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a train Tuesday morning in Pompano Beach.

Though originally identified as a CSX train by the Broward Sheriff's Office on Tuesday afternoon, BSO said Tuesday night it was a northbound Tri-Rail train that struck a man.

On Wednesday, BSO identified the man as 23-year-old William Chase.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue spokeswoman Sandra King said witnesses told rescue workers Chase tried to beat the train across the tracks at 1200 Martin Luther King Blvd. on foot at about 10:30 a.m.. BSO said witnesses saw him walk around a train safety gate, ignore the flashing lights and clanging bells and cross the tracks.

The train operator didn't know anyone had been hit, so continued on into Palm Beach County.
