Two men were killed and one was injured Sunday night when bullets began flying as hundreds of people gathered outside Lauderhill Mall after a nearby car show, police say.

An officer working a detail heard the shots and called for backup, the department said Monday.

The officer found a wounded man, later identified as Omarie Stephens, 33, in front of a business in the 1400 block of State Road 7.

Meanwhile, police say, 911 was flooded with calls reporting a shooting in progress at the mall, 1267 State Rd. 7. Officers soon found Lawrence Hall, 32, with an apparent gunshot wound in the parking lot on the east end of the mall.

Lauderhill Rescue took both Stephens and Hall to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where they died.

Another man, who was not identified, drove himself to Plantation General Hospital to be treated for a non-life-threatening injury to his leg, police said.

Police say the shooting happened just before 10 p.m. when people began “assembling in the parking lot of the Lauderhill Mall after a car show ended at the Broward County Regional Park located just south of the Mall.”

“Witnesses stated that a fight erupted and shots began ringing out,” police said in a news release. “After hearing the shots, people began fleeing the scene.”

Police say evidence suggests that more than one type of gun was used, but it was not clear what may have led to the shooting.

Detectives were “scouring surveillance footage of the area and sifting through evidence,” police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Lauderhill Police Department Investigations Unit, Detective Allyson at 954-497-4700 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
