Tape shows robber snatching church donations from woman

Authorities are trying to identify a man caught on surveillance tape snatching a church donation canister from an elderly woman.

The robbery happened outside Rusty's convenience store at 981 NW 27th Ave., west of Fort Lauderdale, at about 5 p.m. on Aug. 12, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Estella Thomas, 77, of Fort Lauderdale, was sitting near the store's entrance collecting money for her church when a man approached her, grabbed the canister and ran away, investigators say.

Thomas was not injured, officials said.

Investigators say the robber may live or hang out at Madison Apartments, across the street from the store.

Officials did not have a specific description of the robber but said he was about 5-foot-10 with a thin build. Witnesses reported the man was wearing Reebok high-top sneakers with white trim, black knee-length shorts and a black baseball cap at the time of the robbery.

The Sheriff's Office asks that anyone with information about the suspect in the surveillance tape contact Robbery Detective Armando Enrique at 954-321-4270 or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-8477.
