A Broward man on Thursday was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the gruesome disemboweling of his girlfriend during drunken sex in a closet.
Fidel Lopez was sentenced in Broward Circuit Court for the September 2015 murder of Maria Nemeth, who lived with him in Sunrise.
How Lopez felt Nemeth had violated him: She said her ex-husband’s name twice during sex.
So he viciously violated her with a beer bottle and a hair flat iron, pulling out some of her intestine. She didn’t regain consciousness.
After he calmed down, Lopez washed his hands and went outside for a smoke. When he realized Nemeth, 31, wasn’t breathing, he called 911.
Lopez, now 26, described his behavior as that of “a monster” during an initial interview with Sunrise police hours after Nemeth’s death.
For his guilty plea to murder and sexual battery with great force, prosecutors stepped back off a punishment: the death penalty.
