Drag racer hits power pole, leaves more than 1,500 without electricity

Two drivers raced down a Hollywood street Tuesday night, one car hit a power pole and 1,583 FPL customers ended up in the dark.

Witnesses reported that one of the drag racers hit the pole, got out of his car, got into another car and sped away at around 11 p.m.

Police are looking for the drivers who wreaked havoc in the area of North 75th Avenue and Johnson Street, said police spokesman Christian Lata.

Witnesses told police they heard a “loud bang” before they lost power. FPL needed to replace the pole and transformer. All but 133 customers had their power back by early Wednesday, FPL spokesman Chris McGrath said.

Power was restored to all customers by 10 a.m. Wednesday.
