Cops looking for name of jogger struck and killed

Florida Highway Patrol is seeking help to identify a jogger fatally struck Saturday morning on State Road 84 in West Broward.

FHP described the man as around 5-foot-11, 200 pounds, 35 to 45 years old, bald, with a goatee. He wore white shorts with an orange shirt and multi-colored shoes. He was running along the outside shoulder of State Road 84 at about 6:30 a.m. when, according to FHP, the right front of Sarah Ruiz’s 2008 Volkswagen Jetta struck him west of Hiatus Road.

Ruiz, who turned 20 on Friday, kept driving, all the way past Flamingo Road to the 12600 block of Sunrise Boulevard. There, FHP says she told a trooper she might have hit something but wasn’t sure what. After the trooper checked out the car and agreed she might have struck a person, a second trooper found the crash.

Troopers ruled the accident as not being alcohol-related. Ruiz has a 2015 ticket for going 73 mph in a 45 mph zone along Flamingo Road. No charges have been filed in the crash.

Anyone with information about the runner’s identity is asked to call FHP at 954-837-4012.
