County wants Miami Beach health center to return grant money

Miami-Dade County is demanding that the Miami Beach Community Health Center repay $580,000 in federal funds after a county review found unsupported and inaccurate bills were submitted, according to a memo.

The demand, from the office of county Mayor Carlos Gimenez, is more bad news for the center, whose CEO was recently charged with stealing $6 million that was supposed to go toward healthcare for the poor and uninsured.

Kathryn Abbate has pleaded guilty to federal charges and entered into an agreement to cooperate with prosecutors earlier this month.

A majority of the center’s funding comes directly from the federal government, but part of it also comes from a smaller grant that is administered through the county.

The county found that, in some cases, the center lacked documentation for charges billed to the county. In other cases, the documentation submitted didn’t match the charges billed to the county.

The center has until May 3 to repay the money, or submit a written response disputing the county’s findings.
