Family, officers gather to mourn FHP trooper killed in Haiti

Fellow state troopers and family members gathered Saturday to mourn Florida Highway Patrol officer Jean Barthelus at the 93rd Street Community Baptist Church.

Barthelus, 47, was in Haiti visiting his ailing wife when he was shot and killed in the Turgeau neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, Haiti on June 9.

The violent death is among several high profile killings that have shocked Haiti recently. While kidnapping and other serious crimes are trending down, police say, the high profile deaths are a major concern.

Trooper Barthelus worked for FHP in Miami for eight years. He is survived by his wife, daughter, mother and several brothers and sisters. His brother, sister and mom all live in North Miami.
