These sterile medical products may not be sterile

Two national distributors of sterile medical products, one based in Palm Beach County, have issued voluntary large recalls of products after U.S. Food & Drug Administration facility inspections of each company cast doubt on the products’ sterility.

Juno Beach-based Tri-Coast Pharmacy is recalling 85 sterile products produced between May 17 and Nov. 17 that haven’t expired. The list, which includes various cocktails and some types of testosterone, can be viewed here.

All recalled products have a label with the company name, logo, the drug name, lot number and the expiration date. Customers uncertain as to whether or not their product is in the recall should call 561-776-7510 or 1-877-823-3284.

Cantrell Drug Company’s 29 recalled products include bags and syringes of local anesthetic lidocaine and pain relieving opiod hydromorphone. The Arkansas company put out a full listing here.

Customers wishing to return medication or needing help with this recall can contact Cantrell Drug Company at 877-666-5222 Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern time.

None of the recalled products have been confirmed as non-sterile, but shortcomings in the FDA facility inspections were enough to spark the recalls. Both companies claim to have received no reports of customers suffering any harm. Anyone suffering problems from products in either recall should contact the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program via the website or calling 800-332-1088.
