A cruise ship returned to Port Everglades Friday morning after a number of passengers became sick with a common type of gastrointestinal illness.

As of Thursday, 60 guests out of 1,138 and 11 crew members out of 579 were reported ill while on the 14-night voyage aboard the Holland America ms Maasdam.

Infected guests, who were suspected to have come down with the Norovirus, were asked to remain in their staterooms until their symptoms disappeared, according to a press release issued by the cruise line Friday morning.

The ship will undergo a thorough sanitization before new guests board the ship for it’s 15-night Atlantic Coast Cruise headed to Montreal, Canada Friday evening.
