ACADEMIC

Johnson & Wales University’s North Miami campus has named faculty member Michelle Garcia dean of academic affairs. Garcia has a doctorate degree in educational leadership from St. Thomas University, where she also received her bachelor and master’s degrees.

ADVERTISING

Anthony Bianco has been named executive vice president and general manager of República. Most recently, he was managing partner at Naked Communications in New York.

BANKS

Apollo Bank promoted Mahesh Pattabhiraman to executive vice president, chief lending officer and Isabel Gomez to senior vice president of global banking. Pattabhiraman was previously senior vice president, chief lending officer at the bank. Gomez previously was vice president and global banking officer.

CRUISE LINES

Peter Giorgi will become the chief marketing officer for Celebrity Cruises. He recently was head of global advertising for Airbnb. Before moving to Airbnb, Giorgi worked for eight years at ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto.

HOSPITALITY

Kyle Faulkner and Jennifer Taylor have been named national sales managers for the Playa Largo Resort & Spa, which is scheduled to open this summer in Key Largo. Taylor was previously director of sales and marketing for Fairfield Inn and Suites in Delaware. Faulkner was senior business development manager for R.W. Smith & Co., based in San Diego.

MEDIA

Telemundo Network has made the following moves:

▪ Mario Ruiz is senior vice president of music and entertainment projects. Previously he was senior vice president, talent development and strategy.

▪ Mara Arakelian has been named senior vice president of talent management, replacing Ruiz. She joins the company from Bobo Producciones in Mexico, where she held the position of management director.

REAL ESTATE

Eli Randel has been named director of business development at CREXi, a commercial real estate exchange for brokers, buyers and sellers, and is based in Miami. He previously was director of dispositions of Invitation Homes, Blackstone’s single-family rental division. Randel has an MBA from the University of Florida.

Carl Romer has been named director of development at K Group Holdings, the developer entity behind Metropica in Broward. He will oversee condo development. Romer, an architect, has a bachelor’s from the Universidad Piloto de Colombia and studied structural engineering at Fresno State University.

Name: Jose Sariego

New position: He has joined Bilzin Sumberg as a partner in the corporate group.

Experience: His experience includes leading the business and legal affairs departments of HBO Latin America and Telemundo.

Also: He has been senior vice president and general counsel for MasTec. He is also an adjunct professor of media law at the University of Miami School of Law and was an adjunct professor of media business law at Miami International University of Art & Design. He is a frequent lecturer and author on entertainment law and international law.

Education: Sariego has a degree in journalism and Latin American studies from the University of Florida and a law degree from the University of Michigan.

Best legal advice: The law is a service business,” meaning client service is what distinguishes lawyers these days. Clients assume competence in the law. What they expect additionally is responsiveness and personal attention.
