Fifteen cafeteria workers at the Hecht Dining Hall at the University of Miami held a strike during lunchtime on Thursday, protesting that their employer, Chartwells Dining Services, is not negotiating with them in good faith, said Eric Brakken, Florida director for 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union, which represnts the workers.
The walk-out lasted from noon to 2 p.m., he said.
About 350 cafeteria workers at the University of Miami are part of the union and are negotiating a contract with Chartwells. Many of the workers earn $10,000 to $12,000 per year, Brakken said.
