Walmart on Thursday announced plans to open its first store in the City of Miami.
The new Walmart Neighborhood Market will be located at 6991 SW 8 St., the former site of Everglades Lumber in the city’s Flagami neighborhood. The company submitted a site plan to the city on Thursday for approval.
The Neighborhood Market concept is essentially Walmart’s version of a grocery store with some extra general merchandise thrown in. By utilizing a smaller format it allows Walmart to get into markets that couldn’t accommodate it’s larger supercenter format.
The Flagami store will be 54,000 sq. ft. or about one-third the size of a Walmart supercenter. The store will offer fresh produce, meat and dairy products, frozen foods, dry goods, pharmacy, pet supplies and household items.

Construction is set to begin next year with an opening in 2014. The property will also include a gas station and a TD Bank branch. The Neighborhood Market will employ up to 100 people.
Walmart currently operates about 200 Neighborhood Markets across the country. The company opened its first one in Miami-Dade County earlier this year in Hialeah.
