Trane warranty overview

Pros
  • Covers most Trane HVAC systems and products
  • Three different warranty options that provide varying levels of coverage
  • Can be transferred to a new homeowner if you sell your home
Cons
  • Doesn't cover labor costs in most cases
  • Customer service quality will vary based on the dealer

Trane sells a variety of heating and cooling systems accompanied by warranties that offer parts (and sometimes labor costs, too) for the essential parts of those systems.

A Trane warranty is honored by more than 10,000 Trane dealers that promise to have extensive knowledge about the product you’ve purchased. If you need to take advantage of your warranty, a dealer can help diagnose problems, repair your system or provide routine and emergency maintenance.

While a Trane warranty won’t cover all damages and repair costs, it offers some beneficial features like owner transferability. There’s an option to purchase an extended warranty for broader coverage terms at an additional cost.

Trane warranty coverage

Trane provides a variety of HVAC warranty protection plans with varying levels of coverage, accessibility and more. Here are the details of Trane’s warranties.

What a Trane warranty offers

A Trane warranty will cover certain key components of your heating or cooling system, including air handlers, compressors, outdoor coils and internal functional parts.  Depending on the warranty level you get, the coverage for outdoor coils and internal functional parts can extend to 10 years.

Trane warranty coverage for refrigerants only covers the replacement costs for parts that are compatible with the newer (R-410) refrigerants. If you have a furnace, you can expect the warranty to cover its heat exchanger and internal functional components. A Trane warranty will also cover the internal functional parts of heat pumps, air handlers, air cleaners, humidifiers, controls and thermostats.

Your product manual should include an in-depth explanation of your warranty’s coverage, but you can also contact support for more information. All Trane warranty customers have access to Trane’s customer service department on Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST. Customer service is available over the phone.

What a Trane warranty doesn’t offer

Every Trane HVAC warranty comes with some limitations in terms of covered parts, damage types and coverage duration.

In most cases, a Trane factory warranty is strictly a parts warranty that doesn’t cover the labor costs and repair expenses associated with replacing or repairing your heating or cooling system. Uncovered labor costs under the standard, included warranties might include those for diagnosing the problem, installing replacement parts and disposing of damaged parts. Your warranty also won’t cover the cost to ship replacement parts.

In addition, Trane’s warranties will only cover damage from a manufacturer defect. They will not cover damage from accidents, natural disasters or a defective third-party product used with your Trane system.

Types of coverage options available

Trane offers three different warranties, each with varying levels of coverage. Below are descriptions of these plans and details on how they can help you fix a potential issue with your HVAC system.

Base Limited Warranty

All systems without a Trane warranty registration, or that you registered more than 60 days after installation, will include a Base Limited Warranty.

This warranty covers parts that malfunction due to a manufacturer defect but excludes labor costs. Trane will provide replacement parts to a licensed HVAC technician when needed, but you may need to pay for shipping, installation or both.

While the Base Limited Warranty typically lasts five years, the duration of the coverage can vary depending on the system. For example, the warranty covers most parts in Trane furnaces for five years, but the heat exchanger is covered for 20 years.

It’s best to check each product’s limited warranty terms for more information on coverage duration.

Registered Limited Warranty

Trane rewards the registration of its products. If you register your Trane warranty within 60 days of the system’s installation, your coverage is upgraded from the Base Limited Warranty to a Registered Limited Warranty.

Like the lesser plan, the Registered Limited Warranty covers only manufacturer defects on parts, but it extends the period of that parts coverage. Most Registered Limited Warranties last 10 years, the length of coverage may vary depending on the purchased system.

Optional Extended Warranty

If the Base Limited Warranty or Registered Limited Warranty is less coverage than you’d like, you can choose to buy an Optional Extended Warranty from your local Trane dealer.

This extended warranty will provide the highest level of protection, typically by adding labor and possibly other coverage. It also extends the time the warranty period runs. Trane says the extended warranties run from 2 months to 25 years.

The Trane Extended Warranty covers parts and, usually, some labor costs as well. While coverage will vary based on your dealer’s offering, some plans will include servicing, routine maintenance or emergency services.

To obtain the options available for your system, you must contact a local Trane dealer. Pricing, too, varies by the product and where you purchase your HVAC system and warranty. Again, Trane says a local dealer can provide the details.

Trane warranties accessibility

Trane warranties may differ in coverage, but most offer the same or similar customer service and claims processes. If you’re wondering how to use your Trane warranty, this section will tell you more about product registration, claims and customer service.

Response time

There is no set, promised response time for the Trane warranty claim process. The duration will likely vary because local dealers generally process claims individually.

If you are experiencing an issue with your Trane HVAC system, you should contact your local Trane dealer, who will schedule an inspection to diagnose problems. After registering the problem, the dealer will file the claim for you through a supplier who can provide the required replacement parts.

Your dealer is also responsible for replacing the received parts. However, you may need to pay for shipping and labor costs if you have a Base or Registered Limited Warranty.

Contact information

You can reach out to your local Trane HVAC specialist for any questions or concerns you may have about the product you purchased. They can help you make buying decisions, repair your system, check Trane warranty coverage and more.

Trane’s website has a tool to help you look up a dealer near you, but you can also contact the Trane customer service line at (800) 945-5884. Customer service representatives can provide basic information about Trane products and help you file claims on your warranty.

For non-emergency concerns, Trane also has a contact form on its website.

Limitations

Trane has specialists located all over the country. However, residents of rural areas may have to travel to more populated areas to find a Trane dealer, which could make accessing parts or emergency assistance more challenging.

In terms of warranty coverage, Trane provides warranties to all customers. However, it will not cover all damages and costs associated with repairs or replacements. Customers will likely need to pay some amount out of pocket.

Registration and warranty transfer

Registering your Trane warranty is simple. If registration did not occur during the purchase process, you can register your Trane warranty online or by phone within 60 days of installation to receive your Registered Limited Warranty. If you don’t do so within this period, you will have only the shorter, Base Limited Warranty.

You will need the following information to register your product:

  • Your name, physical address and phone number
  • The address of the HVAC system’s installation
  • The dealer’s information
  • The serial number for each installed product
  • The date of installation

The invoice for your products will include all serial numbers you need to register them, and online registration allows you to register multiple products at once. When you finish the process, you should receive a warranty certificate that you can keep for your records. If you experience problems, you can call Trane at (855) 260-2975 or email product.registration@concentrix.com.

All systems registered after August 1, 2011 are eligible for transfer to new homeowners. Because the new homeowners can take advantage of the remainder of the warranty’s term, the coverage could be a park for selling the house.

You complete a Trane warranty transfer by contacting the Warranty Department. There’s a transfer fee of $99, which you must pay with a credit card.

You must transfer the warranty within 90 days of selling your home. If you don’t, the new homeowner will only have access to the remainder of the Base Limited Warranty.

Trane warranty customer satisfaction

If you need to take advantage of your Trane warranty, the company’s customer service will be crucial to ensuring the process goes smoothly. Unfortunately, this service sometimes – even often – seems to be mediocre at best, based on the reviews of warranty experiences left by Trane customers.

Third-party ratings

Trane is not accredited with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and currently has a B rating. In addition, its customer reviews garner only an overall rating of 1.07 out of 5 stars on the BBB website.

Customer reviews and complaints

Trane has marginally better ratings on customer review sites. For example, it has a 3.9 rating on Consumer Affairs. Unfortunately, many reviews on this site point out poor quality of Trane’s HVAC systems, and of the company’s customer service and warranties.

Some customers cited issues with their system within a few years of purchase, while others had difficulties getting customer support. A few reviewers also noted high repair costs.

To check the status of a Trane warranty, you can turn to the Trane Warranty lookup tool available on the company's website. What does a Trane warranty cover?

Your Trane warranty coverage will vary based on the plan you get. The Base Limited Warranty and the Registered Limited Warranty will cover the cost of replacement parts if your HVAC unit has a manufacturer defect. However, they will not cover shipping or labor costs.

The Optional Extended Warranty will also cover replacement costs, but it may or may not cover labor costs. More details on these three plans are available on Trane's website.

How we evaluated Trane warranties

We evaluated Trane’s warranties based on several factors, including coverage limits, longevity, costs and customer service. We also looked at features such as the registration process and transferability. In addition, we researched user reviews to determine how the company handles warranty claims and how satisfied customers were with the process and the outcome.

Summary of Trane’s warranties

Trane sells its HVAC systems with comprehensive warranties to cover costs from potential manufacturer defects. The longevity of the standard factory coverage depends on if and when you register your system with the company; if you do so promptly, you will qualify for longer coverage.

In most cases, you’ll have to cover labor and maintenance costs yourself, especially with either of the standard factory warranties. However, the Trane Extended Warranty, available at extra cost, typically expands  coverage to include at least some labor costs. Parts coverage may also be more generous.

The narrow scope of  a Trane warranty may mean you want to consider getting a home warranty. These, too, have their limitations but they allow you to potentially cover multiple systems and appliances in a single warranty, for which you pay – usually monthly.
