Things To Do

Datsik Opens Honeymoon

Are you sick and tired of not being able to see the DJs you love – Bob Sinclar, Paul van Dyk, David Guetta, Paul Oakenfold, etc. – performing at clubs in Miami Beach because you’re not 21? Well, here’s some good news: The Fillmore Miami Beach along with Embrace is putting on an all-ages monthly electronic music event called Honeymoon kicking off Saturday night, and the acts are sick. In fact, the first act is Datsik, a Canadian dubstep DJ who has collaborated with artists such as the Crystal Method, Wu-Tang Clan, Rusko, Bassnectar and DJ Craze. It’s a promising start to a hopefully longtime event. James Murphy from the Fillmore talked to about the new event.

What’s your background in electronic music promotion?

Between The Fillmore and Embrace there is a very healthy background of electronic music promotion. We have brought great acts to The Fillmore, such as Bassnectar, Pretty Lights and LCD Soundsystem, while Embrace has been a major player in the electronic music scene since it was founded in 2002, producing shows not only in Miami but also Toronto, Atlanta, Boston and many other places.

What inspired you to create Honeymoon?

We always strive to give people the music and shows they want to see. There’s definitely a demand in South Florida for an event like Honeymoon, and teaming up with Embrace to create something fresh seemed just right.

What does the name mean?

As you know, the venue name is The Fillmore Miami Beach at The Jackie Gleason Theater, and “Honeymoon” is a play off the Jackie Gleason comedy show “The Honeymooners.”

Why did you choose the Fillmore as your venue?

The Fillmore is such an amazing place to see live music of any genre. It’s intimate, but offers a lot of space for people to dance. The sound is awesome and the overall ambiance fits perfectly with an event like Honeymoon.

What kind of audience are you aiming to attract?

I don’t think we’re aiming to attract any one particular kind of audience. If you love electronic music, or if you want to see what Honeymoon is all about, we welcome you.

How important is it to offer an all-ages electronic music event in Miami Beach?

We think it’s important that Honeymoon is all-ages. The under-21 crowd is very limited to where they can see live electronic music in Miami Beach. We are happy to be an outlet for them as well as everyone else.

What can people expect from the night, month-to-month?

To have a great time fueled by some of the best dubstep and electronic-music DJs.

How are the musical acts chosen?

We are trying to bring fresh and cutting-edge acts to Honeymoon that will also draw a lot of people, as The Fillmore is a bigger venue to fill than a small club.

Datsik is pretty dark and underground – who are some of the other upcoming acts?

Zeds Dead is another act we have announced. They are the headliner for the May Honeymoon event (Friday, May 6). You can check them out here, and artists who will be headlining the upcoming months are TBA.
