Things To Do

Brian Atwood

Buzzy shoe labels and women — they go together like Carrie Bradshaw and rocky relationships. So when we found out Hollywood’s IT shoe designer Brian Atwood is coming to Saks Fifth Avenue Bal Harbour in conjunction with Miami magazine on April 27 for an appearance, we’re so there (in our Maniac platforms, of course). We just chatted up the red carpet’s go-to shoemaker on muses, Miami, must-haves, Eva Mendes and more.

Who do you design for — your mother, your best friend, your lover, or the sexy mysterious gal next door? I design with all of those women in mind. Obviously, my goal is to make women look and feel as gorgeous as possible. For me, it doesn’t matter if it’s my mother or the sexy mysterious girl next door. They all share a common goal for me — beauty.

What is your favorite dance? The tango. It’s such a sensual dance.

We saw you on The Rachel Zoe Project. How has your relationship with Zoe shaped your career? Rachel’s been a very close friend of mine for over 15 years and I love her immensely. We’ve seen each other’s careers take off. Rachel’s been amazing in placing my shoes on some of her clients and has always believed in the product and me. I’m forever thankful for that.

Who from history would you have loved to see in your shoes? Cleopatra.

If there had to be one color in the world, what would it be? Purple.

Walk us through your closet. What would we find? It’s extremely organized and everything is color-coded. My housekeeper, Roseangela, is meticulous. There’s Dior for jeans. Tom Ford, Dries van Noten and Dior for suits. In the middle of the room is a Poul Kjærholm PK 80 daybed.

What kind of shoes do you covet? Everything from espadrilles to crocodile loafers.

A-list stars are maniacs (pun intended) for your shoes. Who is your celebrity crush? Eva Mendes. We’re friends but every time I’m around her I’m amazed by her beauty and humor.

You’re smokin’ hot and create killer heels — perfect in our book — but what’s your biggest flaw? I procrastinate and I tend to get bored of things. When I notice that happening, I stop, walk away and come back to it with a fresh point of view.

What do you love most about the Magic City? What’s not to love? There’s the sun, beach, great shopping and it’s so close to NYC. Miami is a great city!
