Things To Do

Walk tall in spendy Fendi sandals

The orange Mary Jane-style platform sandals from Fendi are perfect for fashion-forward women who are clever and witty and want to walk tall.

Super current in that ‘70s-kind of retro way that’s so popular right now, these are made from leather, grosgrain fabric and cork. Splurge-worthy, they are $895 at neimanmarcus.com, and nordstrom.com.

Not so cheesy

Because you like to be entertaining when you entertain, check out this stone cheese board shaped to look like a piece of Swiss cheese. So clever. Even Velveeta will look festive on it. Made of Mexican alabaster, the board comes with a stainless steel knife. You’re on your own for the cheese. It’s $100 at uncommongoods.com. The product:

Star Powder Diamond Collection by Make Up for Ever.

The pitch:

Use this shimmer powder on your eyes, face or decolletage to add some extra sparkle for date night or any time you want to feel special.

The price

: $22 at Sephora. To find a store: sephora.com

The pros:

It’s versatile. The same product can be used on your eyes, cheeks, etc. The sparkle can be applied with a wet brush or a dry brush, depending on the look you’re going for. The sparkle is high quality and, if applied sparingly, will definitely brighten up your appearance without making you look like a drag queen.

The cons:

A little pricey.

The bottom line:

Go for it!

The product:

Double Extend Eye Illuminator Mascara by L’Oreal Paris.

The pitch:

Use this mascara to lengthen your lashes. Then use the special top coat to illuminate them and bring out the color of your eyes.

The price:

$10.95 at drug stores and mass merchandisers such as Target and Meijer.

The pros:

The mascara comes in different shades to highlight blue eyes, green/hazel eyes and brown eyes. There’s a universal color that is supposed to be appropriate for all eye colors. Definitely extended the length of my eyelashes. In the light, I could see a few flecks of sparkle from the top coat and felt kind of glam.

The cons:

Coworkers didn’t think my eyelashes looked especially illuminated; one person thought the mascara made my eyelid look pink or purple.

The bottom line:

If you’re in the market for a new mascara, give it a try. It will extend your lashes. As for the illuminating effect, a little goes a very long way.
