Gondolas will never be the same after Red Bull Candola takes over the Venice of America for its inaugural event. Twenty-two teams of three will race their manmade and human powered boats down Fort Lauderdale’s New River where they’ll be scored on their creativity, showmanship, and overall race time. To win over the judges, teams will also perform a :30 second skit before their race.
While the hope is that all of the gondolas will stay afloat, it’s not very likely. All boats must be entirely human-powered – in other words, no motors or stored energy – and cannot exceed 100 pounds (without passengers) and must be between six and twelve feet long. Oh, and strong swimming skills are required by all aboard.
The event will take place between Huizenga Plaza and Esplanade Park on Saturday, April 9th and from noon to 2 p.m. on the New River waterway.
