Remember back when everyone said that the Internet was killing people’s ability to read anything longer than 500 word blog entries? Yea, so much for that. I read all seven pages of the recent New York Times Sunday Magazine profile of director Spike Jonze – on my iphone no less – with rapt attention. The story details Jonze’s rise from DIY music video director (his video for the Beastie Boy’s Sabotage is still one of my all time favorites) to feature film auteur (I loved Malkovich, Adaptation less so) to being handpicked by Maurice Sendak to adapt Where the Wild Things Are, a five year odessy in which he’s had to tame monsters and studio heads (nearly indistingusiable, except the latter has better teeth) and let his inner child be his guide. Much has been made about his struggles with Warner Bros. brass, who reportedly wanted a more cartoonish version of the film, but it sounds like Spike has prevailed, which is good news for discerning audiences but could spell trouble at the box office. We’ll find out on Oct. 16.
