Banish Belly Fat — Minus the Surgery

“Body contouring” without surgery sounds like something that falls into the same category as diet pills, cellulite creams, and electric abs belts—quick fixes that rarely (if ever) live up to their big claims. But FDA-approved SculpSure uses heat to dissolve fat cells – and trim inches off your torso – forever. “This is ideal for the person who wants to avoid surgery, for someone one who has trouble spots that diet and exercise haven’t been able to eliminate,” says Dr. Anique Bryan of Rejuvenate Body Design, the only place in Miami currently offering the treatment.

Who Should Try:

According to Dr. Bryan, the ideal candidate is someone already committed to making healthy lifestyle changes who doesn’t have a lot of weight to lose but is more concerned about problem areas, particularly in the waist and tummy. A pretty accurate description of me after having three kids. While I’ve lost most of my baby weight, I’ve never quite regained my pre-baby shape. I signed up.

You need to be able to “pinch at least an inch” to be a candidate for treatment, so nurse Rosemary McLaughlin manhandled my midsection to get a sense of how much she could pinch. And yes, there was plenty to pinch.

How It Works:

The machine works by aiming lasers at your fat cells and eliminating them. (Don’t worry, you can’t feel the “eliminating” at all. In fact, it felt so much like nothing that I was afraid it wasn’t doing anything!) The whole thing last twenty minutes.

Rosemary set me up for the procedure by first taking abdominal measurements, weight, BMI and of course “before” photos. Then, as I stood, she gathered up as much of my pinch-able abdominal fat as possible and placed it into a plastic grid-like frame, which became the treatment area (yes, my midsection almost resembled a bread loaf pan). Then as I lay on a table the octopus-like nodes were clicked into the frame and as the procedure progressed the machine sent alternating heating and cooling pulses to the area.

The fat is then released into your interstitial fluid and flushed out by your lymphatic system. Because we store our toxins in our fat, this also has a cleansing effect on the body. I was told to drink plenty of water, massage my midsection and encouraged to do a lymphatic massage to help with the drainage (all patients receive the massage as part of the treatment).

We haven’t reached the six-week mark yet to assess results but I can feel a slight decrease. Most important, my stomach feels less bloated and there’s definitely less protrusion. Am I ready to rock a crop top? Not necessarily but I’m definitely feeling more svelte.

Treatments range from $1200 – $2,000.
