Velvet underground: July 25-31

Sometimes we think the real party’s on Facebook — just log on and read the countless promoters’ shameless plugs in ALL CAPS and multiple exclamation points!!! for the best parties ever! But that’s not the case when acts like, say, LMFAO come to Mansion. The “New ’80s” duo will perform there Saturday night, even if its name is indeed the online equivalent of pre-recorded audience laughter on an old ’70s sitcom. Whatever the case, they’re cool even if they are friends with Paris Hilton.

Over at Set on Monday night, Sebastien Leger spins his inimitable brand of electro house. In other developments, we’re very excited to see that a Segafredo will be opening in the former Sylvano space next to Opium in Miami Beach’s South of Fifth neighborhood. No word on when, but we’ll keep you posted.

Miami Spice is not yet upon us, but Euro-fab Badrutt’s Place is offering a $36, three-course prix fixe dinner menu that includes truffles — the mushroom kind — and dark chocolate mousse. Yum.

Another delicious diversion can be found Wednesday and Thursday at The Standard for the first Bring Your Own Lobster Love Fest, celebrating miniseason from 4 p.m. “until lobsters are out.” For a $15 crack, cook and grill fee, you also get a side dish and salad. For those who wish to make a whole “staycation” out of it, the hotel is offering a $99 “Lobster Lay Over” rate for Wednesday and Thursday night. As for those who have no intention of catching their own lobster, well, either bribe someone else or order off the regular menu.

Despite the somewhat oppressive heat of late, outdoor diversions are proving very popular and the TripAdvisor Summer 2008 Traveling Movie Tour is no exception. TripAdvisor is hosting free outdoor film screenings Aug. 6-7 at Miami Beach’s Lummus Park. On Aug. 6, see the Audrey Hepburn classic Roman Holiday and on Aug. 7, the John Candy classic Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Movies start at sundown; arrive at 6 p.m. to get a good spot. The festival is actually a charitable affair as well, teaming up with Suitcases For Kids to collect donations of new and gently worn suitcases, backpacks, duffel bags and diaper bags that will be donated to Children’s Home Society of Florida. Bring the bag full of candy, popcorn and drinks and then leave the bag behind. Donations get you an entry to win your own Roman holiday.

For those who are still snoozing their way through summer, consider The Big Sleep on Thursday at PS14. In addition to some seriously funky art and, er, body painting, there will be performances and special DJ sets by Madame Turk and (possibly one of our favorite DJ names of late) Salami Fingaz, among others. Stars at 11 p.m., cover is $5.

From camp to vamp, over at The Fifth on Saturday is the kickoff party for SíTV’s Model Latina, yet another reality show. It premieres at 9 p.m. Sunday and challenges 10 Latinas to prove they have “it all — good looks, culture, style, sophistication and smarts.” How does one have ”culture,” we wonder? Anyway, the party starts at 11 p.m. and features the Miami contestants as well as DJs Lemoch and Danny Stern. For guest list, e-mail rsvp@thefifth.com.

As for the actual reality of how this summer rates? The jury’s still out. But we’re sure we’ll hear all about it on Facebook sometime in the near future.
