Bella Thorne was looking festive on Monday, in a bright red dress, perfectly complementing her wavy, long auburn hair. “I love the holidays,” says the Pembroke Pines native from the Mandarin Oriental Miami Hotel. “It’s a fun excuse to dress up.” Bella, who attended both Lakeside and Chapel Trail elementary schools before moving to Los Angeles, was back in her old stomping grounds to promote her part in the latest Alvin and the Chipmunks movie in the franchise.
The Road Chip brings the mischievous creatures — Alvin, Simon and Theodore — to Miami to try to stop their “dad,” music manager Dave (Jason Lee), from proposing to his doctor girlfriend Samantha (Kimberly Williams-Paisley). Bella plays Ashley, a pop singer who who ends up performing with the little guys.

Though Bella has modeled; written a series of young adult books for Random House (Autumn Falls); and acted in a number of TV shows (Shake It Up, Scream) and movies (The DUFF, Blended Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day), the 18-year-old hadn’t done much in the animation arena.
“I loved Alvin growing up,” Bella explains of the sequel’s appeal. “And this one is very entertaining — there’s a lot of music and dancing and some great new characters. It’s something light and fun to see with the family.”
As for her own favorite holiday movies, she’s a sucker for 2000’s Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
“I’m a big fan, I must say. I love that guy,” says Bella, adding that she has her very own version of a spoil sport at home: her Husky, Hades, aka (affectionately) “Demon Dog.” “My big dog is the Grinch considering he likes to knock down the tree,” she says. “I don’t know what’s wrong with him. I get very angry with Demon Dog.”
Another ongoing problem is that Hades has expensive tastes.
“He only chews expensive things; he ate every other one of my mother’s Chanel flats — the left [ones]. And all three of the couches.”
Also mixing things up at the house is her cat Louis V (short for Louis Vuitton) and Kingston, a Maltipoo, who has a fondness for Angus beef but doesn’t get much respect in the Thorne household.
“Hades ripped down Kingston’s stocking so I have to get him all new stuff,” Bella explains. “It’s a very sad dynamic.”
Bella is being funny, of course. She’s that rare breed — glamorous and girly girl but able to crack a joke and throw out boisterous belly laughs.
“I’m very manly and tomboyish,” admits Bella, who wouldn’t mind playing the Rachel McAdams gender-swapping part if there were a Hot Chick 2.
“I have every line of that movie memorized so it would be so easy for me,” she says. “I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty. I sit in a dress with my legs hanging out. It’s very not cute.”
We beg to differ. Bella is drop-dead gorgeous, and as evidenced by many a social media post, definitely knows how to put an outfit together.
So, c’mon, any fashion tips for this time of year?
“Incorporate glitter somewhere, but not too much,” Bella advises. “Shimmer eye makeup is pretty and put on some extra jewelry.”
