Venezuelan model and singer Gretchen Serrao, who participated in the popular Univision show “Nuestra Belleza Latina” in 2012, died in Miami on Monday, her relatives said in a statement on Wednesday which was reported by People en Español.
According to the family, Serrao, who was known as Gretchen G, died at the age of 28 “because of a disease she had for some time.”

“It is with great regret that we confirm the death of our beloved daughter and sister Gretchen Serrao (Gretchen G) on Monday, October 8,” the family said in the statement. The relatives highlighted the “passion” the young woman felt for music and wished that fans remember her “for the wonderful person she was.” They also asked for “respect” in this moment of mourning.
“We want to officially announce that Gretchen suffered from a disease which she had been fighting for several years and which finally overcame her and resulted in her death,” they said in the statement.
Among Gretchen G’s best known songs are “Tu princesa” and “La salida,” which reached the top of the Billboard Latin charts. She was nominated in 2013 for the Premios Lo Nuestro in the category of Female Tropical Artist of the Year.
Gretchen Serrao was born in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela. According to reports, she started singing early. At age 15 she settled in Miami and in 2012 released her first album, “Mírame,” which was well received.
Next Saturday a mass will be celebrated in her memory. No details were offered about the funeral.
