The alcohol was flowing and the music was bumping at the Masterpass House at the W South Beach during Major League Baseball’s All-Star Weekend.
Fans of the nation’s pastime gathered by the open bar while others shimmied poolside to beats by a live DJ. But the highlight of the evening was Jennifer Hudson and her impressive vocals.
Is the former American Idol standout a fan of singer Bruno Mars? She opened the private concert with a mashup of “Uptown Funk” and her 2014 single “It’s Your World.”

JHud, dressed in a plain black top with matching black skirt and a bold purple lip, belted out other hits including her own “Spotlight,” a soulful rendition of Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston. During the latter, she hopped into the crowd to mingle with fans.
The singer, who will take to the signing competition show “The Voice” as a coach in the fall, quickly became dewy in the first few minutes of her show.
“It’s hot as hell!” Hudson said.
The heat had nothing on JHud’s stellar performance. She belted out notes in a way that made it seem effortless.
And she took the house down with her closing song, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” which was originally performed in the Broadway classic “Dreamgirls” by Jennifer Holliday. Hudson nodded to the 10 year anniversary of the screen adaptation of “Dreamgirls.” In the film, she made her acting debut as Effie White alongside Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx and Beyonce, later winning the 2007 Oscar for “Best supporting Actress.”
Her co-star, Jamie Foxx, was also in town for MLB All-Star Weekend and played in the celebrity baseball game.
