Islamorada’s annual Baygrass Bluegrass Festival is set for Jan. 17-18 featuring several leading bluegrass bands — both “oldgrass” and “newgrass” — at the ICE Amphitheater at Founders Park, mile maker 87. Festivities open with free jam sessions for “all skill levels” beginning at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Sunday’s headliners include Mr. Sun, composed of multigenerational hotshots in a 21st century string band (banjo master Tony Trischka is to join them onstage), as well as “outlaw bluegrass” by Grandpa’s Cough Medicine, the Southeastern Swampgrass father-daughter duo Amanda and Scott Anderson, and the Short Straw Pickers playing music characterized as “jamboogiebluegrassicana.” Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the gate. Money raised helps fund music, dance and art scholarships for local students.
