The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, a major new cultural complex, has opened in downtown Orlando. The $386 million venue rests on a nine-acre site over two blocks. It includes the 2,700-seat Walt Disney Theatre designed by Los Angeles architect Barton Myers and the 300-seat Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, considered the center’s “black box” theater. In addition to the center itself the site will include a three-quarter acre public plaza and space for restaurants and shops.
