Q. Is there anyway I can enlarge my lips without looking weird? A lot of my friends have had it done and they look like someone punched them in the lips. What can I do?
A. It's not about the size it's about the shape (at least when it pertains to lips). In choosing a physician who is going to inject your lips, it is important that you find someone who understands the shape and the anatomy of the lip. The most common products used for lip enhancement are the hyaluronic acids (HA). HAs are very well-tolerated they last anywhere from six months to a year. And they have very limited side effects when injected properly.
Because the effect is instantaneous, you can have your lips injected to a level you’re comfortable with. You should understand however, that you will have some swelling in the first one or two days, which will subside. Thus, plan on giving yourself a few days for the swelling to go down.
When I enhance lips, I ask patients what they would like and to bring me photos of lips they like. In shaping lips it is important to enhance the areas of the lips that are defective. In younger patients lip enhancement is about size and shape. In older patients, over 40, it's about shape and bringing back the volume lost with age. The actual procedure is done with minimal discomfort after a topical anesthetic solution is applied. The procedure may take 15 to 20 minutes. Ice compresses are placed for about 20 minutes then the fun can begin.
