Q: I have one ear that sticks out more than the other. I am a 52-year-old man and have recently cut my hair shorter and will become more self-conscious about it. Is there anything I can do for this?
A: You could use Krazy Glue and stick it to your head but that would not be very comfortable nor permanent! The best way is a unilateral otoplasty, an operation that fixes your ear with surgery. There are several reasons why an ear may be sticking out. You may have a large conchal bowl or you may have an ear fold that is not well formed. Either one of these problems may be corrected with surgery.
The surgery may be performed with local anesthesia. It may also be done under sedation with local anesthesia depending on your ability to deal with stress. Surgery generally takes about an hour and is performed as an outpatient procedure. The stitches are placed behind the ear and are generally well hidden so that you may return to work within a week. Pain is minimal. Full exercise and activity may be achieved within a month.
