A New Study Reveals What's Most Deeply Discounted During Memorial Day Sales, and It's Good News For Your Garden

If your idea of the dream three-day weekend involves taking advantage of Memorial Day sales, you're not alone. There's a reason why retailers go hard on promotions and markdowns during this time of year-we're about to embark on a new season that often requires a little refresh. After all, if you haven't swapped out your flannel sheets for something lighter by the end of May, you're setting yourself up for one uncomfortably warm night's sleep.

The same goes for your outdoor space. Now's the time to change out some of those tired-looking patio sofa cushions for something that offers a little more support. And your garden? Well, soil needs to be turned over, seedlings need to be transferred into the ground, and plant food needs to be purchased. But are Memorial Day sales even good for that stuff? A new study says yes.

According to a report from Decodo, a web data collection and proxy service platform, patio furniture and outdoor goods are expected to see the biggest average discounts at 34 percent off. This is an important figure to know as you shop over Memorial Day to determine whether or not you're really getting a good deal or not. Any discount that's less than 34 percent off might be easier to pass up, and anything more is stock-up pricing.

If a sale sign or online product description doesn't denote the percentage off during a sale, I like to use a discount calculator to quickly figure out what I'm working with. Math was never my strong suit and trying to calculate a percentage-off on the fly in the middle of a store certainly isn't going to work out for me. Hey, we all have our strengths ... and our weaknesses.

"The shoppers who consistently get the best Memorial Day prices are the ones who decide on a target price before the sale starts," says Gabriele Vitke, Product Marketing Team Lead and dynamic pricing expert at Decodo. "Once you have a number in mind that you would actually pay, you can read a markdown for what it is, a temporary signal rather than a permanent invitation. That mirrors how the pricing engines themselves operate, with thresholds set before the transaction window opens."

Which Other Categories See the Biggest Memorial Day Discounts?

Decodo's research cites that after patio furniture and outdoor goods, you'll see fashion and apparel with a roughly 32 percent discount, then mattresses and bedding at around 30 percent off on average. From there, major appliances could see a price drop of about 22 percent. Groceries and beverages will see some sales, but only 15 percent. Still, savings is savings.
