Norwegian Getaway to feature Latin ballroom and (shh!) Carlo’s Bakery

Norwegian Cruise Line’s upcoming Miami-based ship, which will be delivered in January, will feature a Latin-themed ballroom dance show, a rotating cast of comedians and a musical about a blonde.

Both the dance show Burn the Floor and Legally Blonde: The Musical come with a Broadway pedigree.

Norwegian, which had headquarters in Miami, also said that dueling piano bar Howl at the Moon will return on Getaway. Instead of the Second City group, the new ship will partner with Levity Entertainment Group — which works with personalities including Amy Shumer, Gabriel Iglesias and Daniel Tosh – for comedy acts.

The cruise operator made the announcements about Norwegian Getaway Thursday during a press conference aboard its sister ship, Breakaway, which arrived at its base of New York City Tuesday. Both vessels have capacity for about 4,000 passengers; Getaway will start sailing the Eastern Caribbean from Miami in February of 2014.

Several announcements have already been made about Getaway, which is under construction in Germany: A magic show in a new venue, The Illusionarium, will debut on the ship, which will also feature the Grammy Experience, including performances from award-winning and nominated musicians. The Illusionarium replaces the Cirque Dreams & Dinner: Jungle Fantasy show on Breakaway, which is based on a production that appeared on Broadway.

Company president and CEO Kevin Sheehan may have revealed too much about Getaway. During the press conference, he asked if the company was announcing that Carlo’s Bake Shop by Cake Boss star Buddy Valastro would also be included on the Getaway. (The answer: no.)

“I thought we were doing that today,” Sheehan said.
