Good fences will make for good neighbors in Wellington.
In the wake of our report about Microsoft founder Bill Gates buying an entire street in the horse capital of South Florida for $37 million, here comes the news that the family of historic rival Steve Jobs is moving right outside his guard gate.
Nearly five years after the Apple founder’s death, Jobs’ widow paid $15.3 million for a 3.5-acre ranch across the street from Gates’ compound.
Laurene Powell Jobs, an investment banker who married billionaire techie Jobs in 1991 then had three children with the father of the iPhone, can now watch her daughter Eve Jobs, 19, become a world-class show-jumping rider.
And by the same token, compete against Gates’ daughter Jennifer Gates, 20, in Wellington’s famous Winter Equestrian Festival starting in January.
Who’s the best rider? “Jennifer probably has the most mileage and experience,” said Mason Phelps, a former NBC Olympics horse jumping commentator. “Jennifer has been at it for longer and has more experience.”
“But both are extremely competitive and successful. If they continue progressing, they both will be a force to reckon with on the international scene. It’s not out of the question that they both would end up representing the United States in future Olympics.”
