Two boats collided Thursday in the vicinity of Mud Key on Thursday, tossing two passengers in the water. One later was declared dead, according to a press release from the U. S. Coast Guard.
A good Samaritan notified the U.S. Coast Guard in Key West of a boat collision involving a 44-foot Catamaran and 55-foot sport fishing boat around 4 p.m.
Two women aboard the Catamaran went into the water.
Crews from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Coast Guard responded. The Coast Guard launched an MH-60 search-and-rescue helicopter from Air Station Clearwater, and a Coast Guard Station Key West boatcrew to assist.

A Coast Guard aircrew hoisted both women out of the water and transported them to Lower Keys Medical Center in Key West. One victim died. The other was reported in stable condition, according to the coast guard.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the collision.
