Within the world of design,” Dutch design star Marcel Wanders has said, “we, of course, work on the form of objects. And we work on the function of objects. But I think what is very important is to work on the surface of objects.” And so he has worked on the surface of his very famous Shadow floor lamp, a white cartoon of a table lamp. White has long been a hallmark of Wanders’ designs, from his egg vase to his Zeppelin chandelier to his life-size white horse. Back in 2006, when he designed the Mondrian South Beach hotel, he relied on white, black and silver with touches of gold. But for the man who’s been dubbed the “Lady Gaga of the design world,” there is, finally, a world beyond white. He has upped the ante with his limited-edition Eye Shadow floor lamp, with a jet-ink printed pattern that will withstand hours of staring. Only 33 will be produced, but the lamp is sure to become as identifiable as Wanders’ white horse. And a lot easier to install in a room. “Luxury,” he says, “starts where functionality ends.” ($13,517. Cappellini, 3800 NE Miami Court, Miami; 305-576-3636; poltronafraumiami.net.)
