UM, FIU openers washed out; doubleheaders set for Saturday

David Thompson’s collegiate debut will have to wait at least one more day.

Thompson, one of the most hyped two-sport Hurricanes recruits ever, missed the football season because of a right shoulder injury. On Friday night, the freshman was set to bat cleanup for the University of Miami baseball team. But the Canes’ season opener against visiting Rutgers was postponed because of rain.

The teams will try to play a doubleheader Saturday. The first game will start at 2 p.m. The second game, scheduled for only seven innings, will start at 7:05.

Thompson, who plays quarterback, set state prep records for career home runs at Westminster Christian.

Had they played Friday, this was the lineup announced by Canes coach Jim Morris: right fielder Tyler Palmer leading off, followed by Alex Hernandez (2B); Chantz Mack (DH); Thompson (1B); Dale Carey (CF); Alex San Juan (catcher); Brad Fieger (3B); Michael Broad (LF); Brandon Lopez (SS); and Chris Diaz (P).

Thompson was not the only freshman in the starting lineup. Lopez, UM’s new shortstop, is regarded as a plus defender and a top professional prospect. He won a state title last season at Plantation American Heritage.

Hernandez was also set to make his Canes debut after transferring from Palm Beach State College.

Weather permitting, the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader will start at 2 p.m., with Saturday’s scheduled game starting 45 minutes after the end of the first game. Friday’s game never got started. First, the start got pushed back from 6 p.m. to 7. The tarp was pulled over the field at 6:45 and never was taken off before the game was called at 8 p.m.
