Dolphins DB Richard Marshall put on IR, replaced by Brandon McDonald

BY ADAM H. BEASLEY

Richard Marshall’s season is over.

The seventh-year defensive back, who started the season’s first four games at corner for the Dolphins, was put on injured reserve Wednesday. He will undergo surgery Thursday, Marshall wrote on Twitter.

“I hate I have to wait till next year to get back on the field but ill be ready,” Marshall added.

The Dolphins filled his spot on the roster with Brandon McDonald, a defensive back they claimed off waivers. McDonald (5-11, 185) spent the first nine weeks of the season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, starting two games.

Marshall’s news was another blow to a secondary that surrendered 433 yards through the air to Colts quarterback Andrew Luck last Sunday, an NFL rookie record.

Dolphins’ donations

Stephen Ross, the Dolphins and Ross’ Related Companies will donate $500,000 — plus all net proceeds from tickets to Sunday’s Titans-Dolphins game that are sold after 9 a.m. Thursday — to Sandy relief efforts.

The guaranteed half-million will go to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York, while the ticket proceeds will be given to the American Red Cross.

“The devastation of Hurricane Sandy knows no boundaries, and I know I speak for the Dolphins and Related in expressing our dedication to help those in need during this difficult time,” Ross said.

The Dolphins also announced Wednesday that they have “taken the necessary steps” to ensure the blackout to Sunday’s game has been lifted.

No hard feelings

Dolphins running back Reggie Bush has accepted Terry Bradshaw’s explanation for the Fox Sports personality’s comments about Bush’s touchdown run last Sunday, which were seen by some as racially insensitive.

Bradshaw said on the air that Bush looked like he was “chasing a bucket of chicken” during the play, which he later said was an inside joke with Fox co-host and former Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson. Bradshaw has since apologized for the remarks, which apparently was enough for Bush.

“I have the utmost respect for [Bradshaw],” Bush said. “I don’t think there’s an ounce of racism inside his body. I think it might have just slipped out the wrong way. It’s happened to the best of us.”

High interest

Much of the national attention Wednesday went to the previous night’s presidential election, but the league took a keen interest in a couple of local results: Colorado and Washington voters legalizing the use of recreational marijuana.

Player use of the drug remains prohibited under the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, which is part of the collective bargaining agreement, the league told USA Today. The players obviously have a say in the policy and could push for relaxed rules when the CBA expires in 2020.

“I’ve got to believe that if it was legalized nationwide, it’d be taken off the books,” said John Denney, the Dolphins’ union representative who, coincidentally, is from Denver. “But that’s so far away from right now. It’s not going to happen. To be honest with you, I don’t see that happening in my lifetime.”

Injury update

LB Koa Misi (calf) was held out of practice Wednesday, while TE Jeron Mastrud (hamstring), DT Tony McDaniel (knee), C Mike Pouncey (knee/ankle) and DT Paul Soliai (ankle) were limited.

QB Ryan Tannehill (knee) participated fully, as did CB Nolan Carroll (knee), LB Karlos Dansby (bicep), WR Brian Hartline (hamstring), FB Jorvorskie Lane (knee), OT Jake Long (back) and DE Jared Odrick (elbow).

Miami Herald sportswriter Armando Salguero contributed to this report.
