Seminoles’ preseason All-American Brandon Jenkins out for year after left leg injury

Senior defensive end Brandon Jenkins, a preseason All-American, is out for the year after an MRI revealed damage to his left leg.

“After receiving information late in the afternoon following an MRI and a weight bearing X-Ray and also awaiting to talk to Brandon Jenkins and his mother, it was determined that Brandon will miss the 2012 season with a Lisfranc injury,” Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher said. A Lisfranc injury sidelined Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem for most of the 2010-11 NBA season.

Earlier in the day, Fisher had mentioned that freshman defensive end Mario Edwards Jr., the nation’s top recruit last offseason, would likely redshirt because of the depth in front of him. As of Monday evening though, it appears as though Edwards might see the field in 2012 after all.

“Brandon is not only a tremendous player, but a great person, teammate and leader that we will miss," Fisher added in the statement. "I know he’ll bounce back and recover to continue a great career.”

Jenkins recorded 21.5 sacks the past two seasons for Florida State. He is eligible for a medical redshirt should he choose not to enter the NFL Draft next year.

FSU plays heavy underdog Savannah State this week. Last Saturday, the Tigers lost 84-0 to Oklahoma State. When asked how he will evaluate his team in a game that is likely to get out of hand early, coach Jimbo Fisher said the Seminoles would be competing against themselves.

“I don’t mean this [negatively], but I hope we get it out of hand quick,” Fisher said. “We have to compete against ourselves. We can’t worry about the opponent; we have to execute the plays that are called.”
