West Palm Beach man sentenced to life in prison for raping girl

A 41-year-old man convicted of molesting and raping a young girl since she was 9 was sentenced on Wednesday to life in prison.

A jury in April convicted Marcelo Riveros on capital sexual battery of a person younger than 12, lewd and lascivious molestation and sexual activity with a child charges.

Riveros, of West Palm Beach, received the mandatory life sentence on the sexual battery charge, but Circuit Judge Barry Cohen also sentenced him to 25 years in prison on each of the other charges.

According to arrest reports, the girl reported that Riveros began molesting her shortly after she and her mother moved to Palm Springs. She was 8 or 9 when the abuse began, the victim told authorities, and it escalated to rape by the time she was 10.

The girl and her mother reported the molestation to Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputies in March 2009. The girl, who was 13 at the time, told investigators that Riveros had raped her as recently as earlier that month.

Deputies had the victim call Riveros and, in a recorded conversation, they say he told her to lie to them about any abuse allegations.
