Two Wellington teenagers are dead and a third teen is in the hospital after the car they were in slammed into the back of a semi truck Tuesday night on Southern Boulevard east of the Glades, Florida Highway Patrol reports.
The crash happened about 9:40 p.m. where Southern Boulevard intersects with County Road 880, the point commonly referred to as 20-mile bend, FHP reports.
Mazelle M. Demeraski, 18, and Jahmila Mariaca, 18, both of Wellington, died at the scene.
According to FHP, Demeraski was driving a Camry and was headed east on Southern Boulevard approaching the intersection at C.R. 880 as a semi tractor trailer was crossing.
"The events that caused the crash are still under investigation," FHP says, but ultimately the Camry hit the rear corner of the trailer being pulled by the semi, and the car rolled severely damaging the front passenger area where the one girl was driving and the other was seated.
Eriberto Gomez Jr., an 18-year-old man who lives in Royal Palm Beach, was in the Camry's back seat and was flown to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach with serious injuries, FHP reports.
The semi's driver, Burnice L. Thompson, 72, of North Carolina was not hurt.
The investigation following the crash closed eastbound Southern Boulevard for more than two hours Tuesday night.
