A man who authorities say fatally shot his girlfriend inside an apartment fled the scene with the couple's 3-year-old son and then later shot and killed himself.
The toddler was not harmed, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. At the scene, Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti said the youngster was inside the apartment at the time of the shooting.
"It's another domestic violence situation that turned sour," Lamberti told WSVN Ch. 7.
The events began unfolding shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a report of a homicide in the Golden Villas apartment complex in the 1300 block of Northwest 18th Drive.
The neighborhood is north of Hammondville Road and west of the Andrews Avenue Extension.
As detectives investigated the woman's death, the man drove away with the youngster to the 2900 block of Northwest 33rd Way in Lauderdale Lakes where, just before 9 p.m., he apparently fatally shot himself inside the vehicle, BSO said. The child was not in the car during the shooting..
Before taking his own life, the man dropped the child off at the home of his parents, detectives told WSVN.
The identities of those involved have not been released.
